Chucky Plays A Hunch

Flucky was sweating. He did not expect the caves to be this warm, and had overdressed. Naturally high-strung, he also felt nervous. At least at home, and amongst his or his cousins' creations, he had the illusion of control, but here he was on enemy ground. Chucky had never purposely led him astray, but there are old gnomes, and there are bold gnomes, but there were no old, bold gnomes, as the old saying went. Chucky was certainly bold.

" Y'surethatthisisgonnawork? "

"As sure as I can be," Chucky replied, chuckling at the ambiguity of his statement. "Of course nothing is sure," he thought. But this is a calculated risk, and one well run. He knew that the library had to be located in a dry place, and probably in a large cavern. There were only a few places where that could be, and Chucky knew of a likely one. With the help of a lead pipe and a little magic, he was able to wend his way around the ancient ventilation system and around most of the mechanical and magical traps, the biggest danger. Now that they had the little girl's attention, not running these sort of risks was foolhardy. As far as the living threats went, well, that was another use for the lead pipe, wasn't it?

The passage broadened. Chucky and Flucky's torches burned brighter as the air became less stale.

"Icinseesunlight! Wemustatakenawrongturn."

"Naw, we are still in the guts of the cave. The light is made by some device. But that's good - we must be close."

Flucky and Chucky raced toward the light, hoping for the prize of the dragon's library.

1. Chucky's intuition paid off - the vast library of the dragon lay before the gnomes.
2. Chucky found a large room, but it was not the library.
