Astrid could see at a glance that the two items, though without much in
the way of decoration, were of the very highest quality. "I wonder if
that's Astr... er, I mean my sword and shield," she exclaimed, hoping that
Velus had not noticed her slip.
"Surely you must know whether or not they are yours?" Velus protested. "Well, they certainly look like mine, but it's not where I expected to find them," Astrid said, trying to recover. Of course, she had no idea what Astra's sword and shield were supposed to look like, but Velus wouldn't know either. She did know that, judging by her conversation with Astra a little earlier, the items were supposed to be some way from here, along with the rest of her gear. If they were Astra's, they must have been moved in the short space of time since the djinn had investigated the route to them. That implied that they must have been moved by magic. By whom? And why? "Aren't you going to take them?" Velus asked, seeing that she hesitated. "I can't manage them both, not together with the lamp," Astrid said. For a moment, she almost said that she wished that she had another hand, but luckily she caught herself in time. "I'll just take the sword." "What!" Velus exclaimed. "You'd rather have that old lamp, which surely must have anything but happy memories for you, than that fine shield?" Astrid nodded. "Well, I suppose I could carry the lamp for you," Velus suggested.
