Astra Starts to Lose Her Mind

Bobo carefully put Astra down on the table next to where Fred - his brain
drained of all thoughts and memories - lay. Vincent gestured, and the
toaster-headed ape left the laboratory, apparently having been dismissed.
Meanwhile Astra frantically tried to think of a way out of her
predicament, but she had to concede that being totally paralysed was
something of a difficulty.
Wires from the pads that Vincent had attached to her temples led into a large metal box that stood on the floor next to the table on which she lay. Vincent picked up another pair of pads and attached them to his own temples. These pads were also attached to the machine by wires. Having done this, he sat down in a chair next to the box, and pressed a button. The machine began to hum and it also displayed winking green and amber lights. But Astra was unaware of this, for she was suddenly in agony. She would have been screaming and convulsing had she not been totally paralysed. She was only aware of the pain, and therefore did not know that she was beginning to lose her memories, the most recent ones first. But after about fifteen minutes, the hum from the machine turned into a high-pitched whine, and several of the lights turned to red. An alarmed expression crossed the face of the scientist-mage. He reached over to adjust the controls, but before he could do so the machine exploded in a blaze of octarine light. He fell off his chair, either unconscious or dead. Suddenly, Astra's pain stopped. Better still, she was no longer paralysed, for Vincent's spell was of a type that would only be maintained for so long as he was conscious. She sat up, and removed the pads that she could feel attached to her temples. Where am I, and how did I get here? she wondered. The last thing I remember:
