Fred and Astra did not, of course, know what was causing the whining noise
that they could hear, but they were well aware that the cave system was a
very dangerous place. It was wise to assume that anything that was
unfamiliar might be a threat. The noise was coming from behind them, so
they turned round in the hope of finding out what was causing it.
The torch from Fred's pack that Astra was holding (he didn't want to have his sword in one hand and a torch in the other if he could avoid it) cast only a dim light. Thus there was little chance that they would see the beetle before it struck. If Fred had been lucky, it might have impacted harmlessly on his sword. Instead he felt a momentary agonising pain, as of something piercing his chain mail and embedding itself into his right upper arm. He let out a cry of agony and dropped his sword. Then the first pulse of electricity and heat hit him, and he convulsed and fell to the tunnel floor. Astra could not tell what had attacked Fred. She grabbed his sword, and looked around, but could see no sign of anything that was threatening. Also the whine had stopped at the instant Fred had cried out. She bent over him to see what she could do for him. His eyes were open, but he lay motionless. Even in the dim light she could see that he was very red in the face and was sweating profusely. Then he convulsed again.
