Sir Josh glides in a slow circle, examining the surrounding countryside,
and silently dives toward the surface of a cornfield. The area is mostly
deserted, most of the population having taken to the shade of their homes
in the heat of the day. A few farmers till the field, slowly and tiredly
making their ways up and down the rows. Reaching the edge of the field, he
turns around and inhales until his lungs can hold no more. Approaching the
cornfield once again, he casts his shadow over a small area, and a farmer
looks up. The man points upward and shouts in surprise and fear, but his
words are lost as Sir Josh releases his pent-up breath. A cascading torrent of flame erupts from Sir Josh's jaws, immolating a great swath of farmland. Individual plants flower into blazing infernoes, painting the surrounding area in an evil reddish light. Sir Josh barely hears the screams of the farmer over the snapping and popping of burning corn as his flaming breath sears the man's flesh from his body. In seconds, a black, charred skeleton hits the ground where the farmer stood, a moment before it crumbles into a smoking heap. Sir Josh, unnoticing, inwardly cringes as his evil self inhales, preparing another blast of fire. He banks slowly to the right, approaching an unburned section of land. Now alerted to the presence of the huge dragon flying above them, the remaining farmers drop their implements and run toward the safety of the nearby buildings. Sir Josh the Dragon outflies them, burning a line of fire that cuts off the farmers from the town. With a few more breaths, he sets the entire border of the cornfield aflame, and the fire quickly spreads inward toward the trapped farmers standing in the circle of temporoary safety amid the destruction. One man grabs his sharp-honed pitchfork from the ground, takes aim, and hurls it high into the air, toward Sir Josh, who sees it too late to dodge out of the way. A slow second passes, in which the eyes of one dragon, a group of farmers, and many townspeople follow the arc of a pitchfork as it rises higher and higher, slowly drawing nearer to Sir Josh's belly... The pitchfork strikes solidly, and the farmers sigh in relief as it connects with the dragon's underside; no other man there could have thrown the weapon more truly, nor with as great strength. Sir Josh finds himself inwardly rejoicing; finally, this evil possession of his body will end, and the people will be safe... and the pitchfork falls away, the blow leaving no mark upon the scales of Sir Josh. The farmers' triumphant cries die upon their lips, leaving moans of hopelessness in their wakes. Sir Josh dives triumphantly toward the ground, landing in the diminishing circle of unburning corn as he leans downward and grabs the farmer who threw the pitchfork. For a moment, only the dancing tips of the flames move, as the farmer, paralyzed with fear, stares into one of Sir Josh's eyes as the surrounding men stand motionless in the corn. Breaking the spell of motionlessness, Sir Josh...
