To Fred and Exotica's relief, after a few seconds Velus clambered
unsteadily
to his (still four) feet, apparently not having suffered any long-lasting
harm from his unpleasant experience, but still as much a dog as
before. "I'm sorry, Velus," Exotica said. "I
don't know why that didn't work. For some reason, the enchantment you are
under seems to be exceptionally resistant. It doesn't seem to be at all
like
the magic that I believe the dragon normally used. Would you like me to
try again?"
"No, thank you, Princess," Velus replied. "That was horrible. I felt like I was on the point of dying. Given the choice, I'd far rather be a live dog than a dead boy." "Are you really a witch?" Andrew asked Exotica. "The history books don't say anything about your dabbling in witchcraft." "Well, it's very recent, and what you told me these history books say about my disappearing seems to imply that I'm never going to return to my own time, so nobody will ever know. It was the wizard Griffyd who was responsible for me becoming a witch." "Griffyd? What a coincidence! I've just been doing a research project on him. But wait a moment! You're from three hundred years after his time. Was this some other wizard of the same name? You must explain it all to me. But let's go somewhere more comfortable than the bathroom." Andrew led the others out into the hall and across to his bedroom, where they stared in bewilderment at the strange furnishings, and especially at the computer standing on a desk in the corner of the room. Exotica sat in the room's one armchair, Fred on the bed, and Andrew on the chair in front of the computer. Velus sat on the floor.
