Reaibn smoothly went on: "Especially as you are to be the new king. Your
coronation is scheduled for 11am tomorrow."
"Changes? What changes?" Fred said. "What do you mean by saying that the King 'has passed on'? You don't mean that you killed him, do you? I couldn't possibly agree to take the throne under those circumstances. Besides, I'm only thirtieth in line. What's happened to all the others?" "I decided that we shouldn't let ourselves be hidebound by tradition. You are obviously the best man for the job, Sir Fred." "You decided? And it's Lord Fred, dammit!" Fred was on his feet now. His hand went to where his sword should have been, but of course it wasn't there. "You seem to be over-wrought, Sir Fred. I think that perhaps you ought to have an early night, so you can rest before your big day tomorrow. The guards will escort you and your lady friend to your rooms. Or you can share a room with her if you'd rather. I'm a broad-minded man." He gestured, and half a dozen well-armed guards walked towards the head of the table. Reaibn's quite insane, Fred realised. How has he obtained such power?
