Velus hopped up onto one of the chairs, and sat down. He looked very
comfortable. Fred and Astra sat down as well, though in contrast they
looked very uncomfortable, perched on chairs that were far too
small for them. I hope there are no splinters, Astra thought.
That's one disadvantage of nudity that I'd never considered. At
least the chairs were solidly built, and were able to take their weight.
Five minutes later the gnome reappeared, carrying a tray on which stood a teapot, a milk jug, a sugar bowl, and four cups and saucers. "Er, I'm not sure that Velus drinks tea," Fred said. "Oh, how silly of me," the gnome replied. "I'll get him a bowl of water." "Hold on," Fred said. "He won't be able to manage a cup, but I'll ask him whether he'd prefer tea or water. Would you like tea, Velus?" Velus gave two barks. "He says 'no'," Fred said. "Perhaps you could get him the bowl of water that you suggested." The gnome's eyebrows rose. "It would seem that this is no ordinary dog," he said. He went to fetch the bowl of water. He soon returned, and placed the bowl on the floor. Velus hopped down from his chair, and began to lap from it. The other three sipped from their cups, which were of course gnome- size, like everything else.
