When Fred pressed one of the buttons on the cane, the metal ribs spread
outwards, stretching out the silk that was attached to them. The silk now
surrounded the end of the cane in a slightly convex circle. Fred still
could not figure out what the device was for, but he found that pressing
the other button returned it to its original state.
Fred and Astra emerged from the stew almost simultaneously. Each had to stifle a giggle at the sight of the other, recognising that they were in no position to laugh. "I like your baton," Fred told Astra. "It looks like a useful weapon, which is more than I can say for this strange cane thing. I suppose you might poke out somebody's eye with one of the metal ribs, but that seems rather farfetched." "Perhaps it's not meant as a weapon?" "Well, what else could it possibly be?" Astra had no answer to that. They walked back towards the castle, getting a good look at it in the process. In some ways the edifice reminded Fred of King Emry's catle in Caemlyn, but it seemed subtly different. Reaibn was waiting for them in the main gate. "My lord, milady," he said, "dinner is served. If you would please follow me."
