Is the man in the next bed Lord Fred, who attempted to free me and whom
I subsequently fought in the gladiator's pit? Astra wondered. His
bandages suggested that he might be, but since all that was visible were
his eyes and his mouth she couldn't be sure. Well, in spite of what she
had said, she wasn't one to bear a grudge. She wouldn't press him on the
matter, not least because it might be too hard to make herself understood.
She realised that she had her left leg in the air at a forty-five degree angle. That suggested that there was plaster under the bandage and that the leg was broken, so she was unlikely to be going anywhere soon, much as she would like to get the Hades out. This was reinforced by the fact that her leg was not supported by the usual pulley arrangement but by a chain. It emerged from the bandages near her ankle and at the other end was fastened into the rock ceiling of the room. "T'isss iss t'e pitsss!" she exclaimed. But she wasn't thinking of the Gladiator's Pit, the Unending Pit, the Bottomless Pit, the little traversed Black Pit, the Pit of Moonlit Despair nor the Pit and the Pendulum. "It certainly is!" the man in the next bed agreed. She noticed that his right arm seemed to be in the same state as her left leg, including depending from a chain.
