~~damn! the woman in the next bed is that blasted princess whom I
attempted to free, the very same who nearly killed me in the gladiator's
pit!! I should've hit her carotid in the first blow, kill her right off --
that would've been
the compassionate thing to do, now we're both fodder for the evil Dragon
and its minions!~~ pondered Fred.
He saw that her left leg emerged from the bandages near her ankle and that a chain led from that point and was fastened into the rock ceiling of the room. The leg was also lifted in the air at a forty-five degree angle; this suggested that the leg was broken and that she was unlikely to be going anywhere soon. Even as Fred was assessing her inability as an aid to escape and her downright liability, she spoke through her broken mouth: "T'isss iss t'e pitsss!" Indeed, but neither she nor he were thinking of the Gladiator's Pit, the Unending Pit, the Bottomless Pit, the little traversed Black Pit, the Pit of Moonlit Despair or the Pit and the Pendulum. "It certainly is!" Fred agreed. He wiggled his arm then seeing how much movement he could force. His right arm seemed to be in the same state as the princess' left leg, including being hefted by a chain. Fred gave much thought of his predicament, first his finding of the bespelled boy, then his finding of the imprisoned maiden, then the Pit, and now this. He knew he had to get out, he just had to: he made a vow to his King and Queen, he made a vow to his People, he made a vow to himself. Although the underground world of the Southern Caves was proving much different than what had been discussed back in his homeland, he knew that he had to kill that dragon! And he also knew that the start to every plan called for a single act.
