Fortunately for Astra, the guards weren't prepared to kill one of their
own in order to capture her. At Astra's instruction, Bob walked out of the
armoury and into the dark and dirty tunnel leading from it. As they came
through the exit, Astra's weight returned and Bob stumbled. Astra took
advantage of this to slide to the floor, at the same time shoving Bob into
his fellows and bowling them over.
By the time they had sorted themselves out, Astra was fifty yards away down the tunnel, running at full pelt. None of the guards was especially athletic, and they were weighed down by their armour, so they soon gave up the chase. "The dragon's not going to be pleased," one of them said gloomily. "Only if he finds out about it," one of them pointed out, and they brightened a little. Meanwhile, realising that she was no longer being pursued, Astra slowed to a walk. She was sad at no longer having the fine armour that she had found, but at least she had the sword that she had grabbed in order to threaten Bob. She had no idea of just where in the cave system she was. The tunnel was gloomy, but fortunately not completely dark, for there was a dim, slow- burning torch attached to the wall every hundred yards or so. After a while, the tunnel emerged into a large cave. Along one wall of the cave, three cells had been carved out of the rock. Each cell had a door consisting of metal bars.
