At first Astra thought that every moment would be her last, but it soon
became apparent that she wasn't going to hit the bottom of the pit anytime
soon. She fell for what she estimated as being several hours, all the time
in total darkness.
Astra had heard old legends about a bottomless pit, but had never taken them seriously. How could a pit be bottomless? She had changed her mind now, though. Was this some magical device that the dragon used for disposing of his enemies? Would she fall here forever, eventually dying of hunger and thirst? Then at last it began to get lighter, and Astra was able to see that her sensation of falling had been an illusion. Somehow she was hanging in mid-air! The pit she was hanging in was some forty yards across, and she was at the centre of it. The bottom of the pit was some twenty feet below her. The light was coming from a room adjacent to the edge of the pit. The room had a highly polished wooden floor, and Astra realised it must be where she had fallen into the pit from. A hooded figure stood in the room. "Goodbye, Astra," the figure said. At that, she began descending, but slowly enough that she would not hurt herself when she reached the pit's bottom.
