The Raft

"That's right," Astra replied.

"So how come you haven't tried to escape in all that time?" Khrusti asked. "The three of you are supposed to be heroes, after all. You could surely have built a boat, or at least a raft."

"The D'Honaires have never been seafaring folk," objected Fred.

"I get seasick very easily," Velus chipped in.

But Khrusti would not be put off, and eventually he managed to persuade the others to help him build a raft. It took a lot of hard work, but eventually they managed to cut enough logs with Fred and Astra's gradually blunting swords. Then they tied them together with vines. (Before anyone asks, they tied the logs together, not the swords.) They improvised a sail from Khrusti's shirt. (Their attempts to use parts of Fred and Astra's armour [284] for this purpose did not prove a success.)

They collected a lot of fruit to feed them during the voyage, and filled some gourds with fresh water. Then they set sail.

1. But the wind and current seemed to be relentlessly on-shore, from whichever part of the island they attempted to set off, and they were unable to leave.
2. Soon the island was disappearing over the horizon behind them.
