the Undying Lands of Bombast

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23481

"How can this be?" said Fred. "Men have lived in these parts the better part of a thousand years and I have never heard this tale." The elf looked at him impishly, "Men are ignorant of things older than they."

Fred returned the look, adding, "It is said likewise that the elves and all faeriekinde are ignorant of things younger than they."

"There you go again," sighed Quirlos, "mistaking Elfkinde with the ilk of Oberon! I'm warning you; when we're in the audience of the Queen Mother such ignorant comments won't be smiled upon!"

Fred considered the wiry elf and it's strange ways for a moment. Up until now he had held to the (simplistic, some would say) Allarian world view in which the Elves had long ago become extinct, a dark and mysterious race that had plagued the old kingdoms of the world in the waking age of Men. But this elf was no illusion, of this Fred at least was certain, and it was unlike any creature he had ever encountered. And this place...if it wasn't Faierieland than what manner of hex or devilry had the elf subjected him to?

"I assure you, what you see is as real as real," said the elf as if Fred had spoke his mind aloud. "And the fact of the matter is we Elves aren't ignorant of those younger than us - we just don't care anymore! There are too few of us left within this world to make any kind of real difference."

Fred was still uncertain of this being's intentions and "Quirlos," he said, "you mentioned earlier that we share a common enemy in Castellan, and then you referred to me as 'mageslayer'. Is that why you've brought me here? Do you mean to overthrow the Dark Heretic?..."

"'The Dark Heretic'," Quirlos sniggered with childlike amusement, "we Elves have far less flattering names that we would brand on the head of that abomination of abominations. But yes, we do seek to destroy Castellan. Due to the temporal magicks he has unleashed of late, the Queen Mother has been unable to muster enough strength for one of the Great Blessings! For 600 years Castellan has ever been our enemy, and only now has he began to realize the full potential of Chaos and the Dark Magicks. He has risen and he has fallen in his power and dominion over life inumerable times since he first appeared on the scene - but his Cause has never faltered and he must be stopped before things get out of hand! And so an unlikely alliance has been struck, has it not? You are the first man to enter the undying lands in over a thousand years! The Queen Mother must think you're something pretty special! More likely than naught you'll be given aid on your Quest, oh slayer of hay merchants!"

"There you go again!" Fred stammered, by this time unnerved by the elf's uncanny ability to tap into his thoughts. "Are you some kind of warlock!? How did you know of the hay merchant!?"

Quirlos burst into laughter, angering Fred even further."We have many eyes in the forest. The Queen Mother fortold of your arrival, and you showed up on the road leading into 'ol Vjorice right on cue. You were destined to slay the sorcerer Hamel and flee into this forest, as you are destined to slay Castellan! And your job isn't over when you've dispatched of Castellan, no buddy! After him there's the Baron Zeitgeist of Axtun, Regin Mort the Impaler of the East, Marchavio the Arrogant of Hespan..."

Fred waved his hand dismissively, thinking this elf was getting ahead of itself. "Belive me, elf, they are all on my hit list already. One thing at a time..."

Just then they came to a house framed with living willows and insulated by mats of reeds. "Here we are!" announced the elf. "The Great Hall! The Queen Mother awaits us! Er, wait, before we go in...there's something you should know..."

  1. "...there's a huge, grotesque mole on the Queen Mother's left cheek. Don't look directly at it or..."
