Since he could not act quickly enough to prevent Checkers from
lighting her lantern, Belboz decided to transform during the few seconds
that it would take her to
complete the process. As he did so, he let go of the ladder (his weight as
a dragon would otherwise have broken it) and glided to the ground.
Checkers tried not to panic when she got her lamp alight and received the considerable shock of finding herself facing the Dragon at a distance of no more than thirty feet (ten metres). Somehow it must have flown down to the floor of the chamber without making a sound. Sitting on its haunches, the beast looked just as her people's lore had described it. Its head was some eight feet off the ground, and it must have been about twenty-five feet from its head to the tip of its tail. Its red scales reflected the light of her lamp - as did its great yellow eyes. While keeping one eye fixed on it, Checkers tried to spot her spear. But she couldn't see it within her field of view, which meant that she could not find it without turning her gaze away from the Dragon. And that she dared not do. Surely if she stopped looking at it, it would take the chance to spring on her before she could find and recover her weapon. Perhaps it wouldn't attack her if she didn't provoke it, though. It evidently hadn't physically harmed Astra, but merely seemingly frightened the Aqualarian almost out of her wits. It seemed that it must have killed Belboz, however. Why hadn't the mage had early warning from his stone? Then he might have had enough time to save them both. These thoughts had only taken Checkers a few seconds, and throughout that time the Dragon had remained motionless, staring at her with those great yellow eyes.
