Belboz went on: "Going by what you said earlier, [23265] now that you can see what you are doing it should be possible for you to glide down. Is that right?"

"Yes. There seems to be plenty of room. I doubt that I could fly back up again, though. That would take much more effort, and I am not sufficiently healed yet. I'd want to throw my spear down first. I don't feel confident about gliding down with it in my quiver, in view of my injury. But what about you? How would you get down?"

"If you could carefully stack some of those barrels underneath the ladder, it ought to be possible for me to climb down onto them from the bottom of the ladder, and then for us to climb up again when we want to leave. If the casks should prove to be too heavy for you to move, then you can remove their lids and let out some of the contents, whatever they may be. It shouldn't be too hard to find something that you can use as a lever should you need to pry the lids off. Be careful, though. Don't put in too much effort in either lifting or levering. You wouldn't want to aggravate your injury."

"Yes, that ought to work," Checkers agreed. "It will be easier for me to glide from here rather than from the bottom of the ladder. It provides a better starting off point, and the greater height will give me more time to stabilise the glide."

Saying which, she threw her spear down into the chamber and then launched herself. She was glad to find that her wings would bear her with only a minimum of discomfort.
