Even if Checkers' teachers had thought that she fell far short of an ideal
pupil, what they had taught her over her years of training - in particular
always to consider the interests of the group ahead of her own - had had
its effect. Danger could lurk down that other tunnel, and she ought to
inform the others about it, rather than investigate it herself and perhaps
get into trouble. She was fairly sure that the Arsenal did not lie that
way, in any case, so there was no real justification for exploring it just
yet.
Returning to the keystone-shaped room end of the tunnel, she could see the others standing below. It would be pointless to descend into the room if shortly thereafter she needed to climb back up again, so she stayed where she was as she described what she had found. When she had finished, Belboz said: "So what should we do now? Astra could lift me up nearly as easily as she lifted you, but I don't think that she could safely lift up Fred nor could Fred lift Astra. However it sounds as if it would be a lot of effort for you to move the boulder that you described back to this end of the tunnel, so as to anchor the ladder. I suppose that if I came up I could help you with that." "Is there no spell which you know that could get us up there?" Fred asked. Belboz thought for a moment.
