Trying Everything

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 23317

Halfway up the ladder, Checkers' searching fingertips discovered a short iron rod. (Getting out her lantern and lighting it again whilst on the ladder had not been an option, because it would have required both hands.) Her arm/wing was almost at full stretch, so if she was not to risk overbalancing she would be able to apply very little force to the lever - if that was what it was. And remembering the hail of rocks that tampering with the rod in the "keystone" room had originally produced, would it be wise to try to move it, even if that was possible?

She decided to climb back up to the tunnel. Then she could shift the ladder, together with the rock that held it in place, further across, so that the rod would be more easily within her reach.

Having done this, before climbing back down she took her lantern out of her pouch and relit it. She hoped that, even though she knew that its light was not strong enough to show her the presumed Arsenal's floor, now that she knew what she was looking for she might be able to see the rod. Not that seeing it seemed very likely to help her, but she wanted to try everything.

  1. In fact it didn't show her the rod, but she did spot a faint reflection - presumably from something on the floor of the room - that she hadn't noticed before.
  2. She saw nothing. Time to put away the lantern, climb back down, and risk experimenting with the rod.
  3. She saw nothing. She wondered if she should risk holding the lit lamp in one hand as she descended the ladder. Perhaps from the bottom of the ladder she would be able to see the floor and thus judge whether there was anything of possible value in the room
  4. Checkers feels that none of the risks are worth it. Time to go back.
