For three days Fred and Astra were kept prisoners in the bunk room. They
were not allowed out and
Synizn never came to see them. As for their needs, three strong-armed
thugs would come once a day to
bring them food and drink. It was on the fourth day that Rolf, the senior
thug, came into the room and
told them that "the boss want'd to see 'em".
As Rolf and his two fellows escorted Fred and Astra back to the wine cellar where Fred had first met Synizn, the burly man said to them, "Look 'ere, the boss has been in his cups, if'n you know what I mean. So don't go vexin' him. He can be a real bear when the sauce is in 'im." Astra was surprised at this warning. "Thank you for letting us know, we appreciate that." Rolf smirked, "Heh, it ain't for you two that I'm telling you this. If you blow him up who do you think he's gonna turn on - after he's done with you two, o'course." When they got to the wine cellar they found Synizn waiting for them at a desk, a flagon in his hand. Fred took note that the Crystallic was nowhere in sight. "Sit," Synizn ordered as they walked in. And then he glanced at Rolf, "You can leave." Without a word Rolf and his men turned around and left the room, closing the door behind them. Fred and Astra remained standing. "Sit, I said," Synizn repeated, more gruffly. "We are not your servants," Astra told him, politely. Fred remained silent. Synizn didn't find this amusing and stood up menacingly. "I'm not giving you a choice. Now sit down!" Synizn's black eyes flashed dangerously, and both Astra and Fred chose to take their seats. But neither of them liked it. "Synizn," Astra then spoke up, "we came here as friends. We came here for your help. That is what your friend Malachi promised of you--" But Synizn cut her off before she could finish with an abrupt, "Malachi is dead." Taking a swig from his flagon he turned his gaze on Fred and added, "And I'm sure that makes you happy. Eh, dragon-slayer?" Fred bared his teeth at Synizn but said nothing. "You've done what she wanted though," Synizn went on. And then he laughed. "And I know that would have made her very happy." "What do you want of us, dragon-man?" Fred demanded harshly. Synizn suddenly grinned at Fred, but his eyes gleamed with evil. "So you really believed that story I told you," Synizn chuckled with amusement. "How foolish you people are. Ignorant savages. Malachi was right. But that is neither here nor there. What matters is what Minestus did to you. How he twisted you." Downing his flagon of ale, Synizn leaned across his desk toward them and then said, "What do I want, little fox? I want to know how he did it."
