For three days Fred and Astra were kept prisoners in the bunk room. They
were not allowed out and
Synizn never came to see them. As for their needs, three strong-armed
thugs would come once a day to
bring them food and drink. It was on the fourth day that Rolf, the senior
thug, came into the room and
told them that "the boss want'd to see 'em".
This was the moment Fred and Astra had been waiting for. This was their chance to find out what it was that Synizn wanted and what he intended to do with them. Rolf, accompanied by his two fellows, escorted Fred and Astra back to the wine cellar where Fred had first met Synizn. Their 'host' was sitting at a desk, a flagon in his hand, waiting for them. Fred took note that the Crystallic was nowhere in sight. "Sit," Synizn ordered as they walked in. And then he glanced at Rolf, "You can leave." Without a word Rolf and his men turned around and left the room, closing the door behind them. Fred and Astra remained standing. "Sit, I said," Synizn repeated, more gruffly. "We are not your servants," Astra told him, politely. Fred remained silent, eyeing Synizn sharply. Synizn grunted with amusement and let the point go. And then Astra took a bold step forward and asked, "Are you going to help us, Synizn?" Synizn ignored her and turned instead back to his flagon which he refilled and then just as quickly swallowed down. And then he leaned over the desk toward Astra and said, "Tell your friend that if he doesn't stop staring at me he's not going to have the luxury of his eyes for very much longer." Fred bared his sharp teeth and, before Astra could respond, said, "Who needs eyes when I can smell you a mile away? And you have a smell I could never miss." To both Fred's and Astra's surprise Synizn suddenly roared with laughter. And, just as suddenly, a dagger flashed through the air and impaled itself just inches above Fred's head. If Fred hadn't ducked it would have imbedded itself in his eye. "I told you once about my temper, little fox," Synizn growled and took another swig from his flagon. Before things could get any more out of hand Astra again spoke up, "Synizn, you haven't answered my question." Without looking at her he replied, "You will stay here with me, I must examine you. The other one will return to his room." And then the door to the wine cellar opened up and Synizn's three menservants walked back in, their cudgels at the ready.
