Although Andrea quickly realized that the people all about her were
ghosts, including herself, she did not understand where she was. She sat
down on a bench to think a bit. Back in Croix she had been taught by her
mother and father that life was harsh, short, and full of possibility
(especially for those gifted by the gods with noble blood). She knew that
life did not end at death, but rather that at the moment of death the
Squid-God came and took you to the water-world of oblivion. In fact she
knew there was much more to it than that. In her short life she had
learned not only from her parents, but also from the Mage who would
be stationed in North Umbria every four years or so, and she also learned
from the priests and priestesses. The Order of Blaelock was very popular
in North Umbria as was the Way of the Stone, and the Calling of the
Hillock Triumvirate. There were other minor sects as well, most
localities worshipped their local God as was custom, of course. But
everything she had learned had brought her to the belief that death was
watery, not cloudy.
so where am I? she thought. She pondered a bit more. She might be in the Grey Havens, but she had always been told that they were islands, not aggregate of cloud and mist. could our priests have gotten it wrong? she thought. But she quickly dismissed that thought, for doubt would only lead to madness. Andrea noticed that the long line of people was becoming shorter and shorter. She got up and approached the line once more. Her step was light on the brick and though in most places the thick, thick clouds reached up miles high, directly ahead of her - to where the line was headed - she saw a most magnificent sight: a sailing ship made of glittering metals and shaped like a salamander! Atop the head flew a clothe in the shape of a Great Squid. All doubt left her tensed soul and she happily rejoined the line, waiting her turn.
