"How does your crystal work, Belboz?" Checkers asks the mage.
Belboz pulls out the crystal again. "You have an enquiring mind, Checkers. That is good. But I am afraid that I cannot explain it very well to a layman. The best I can do is say that dragons have an 'aura', for want of a better word. The crystal is 'tuned' to that aura. They are very rare, and I was lucky to find one. Unfortunately I don't have another, or I'd give this one to you." "All very plausible," Astra thinks. "Whatever the crystal might do, if anything, it's not a Dragon detector, though." Just then a sigh from Fred indicates that he is awakening. He yawns, rubs his eyes, and sits up. "How do you feel?" Checkers asks him. "Much better, thank you. And the pain in my foot has almost gone. Let me stand, and try putting my weight on it." He gets up and tries out his injured leg. He smiles. "Even when I put my full weight on that foot, I can feel only the slightest twinge, and there is no stiffness in the ankle joint." "Excellent," Belboz says. "Let us be going, then. Whilst you were sleeping, Astra has had a look at Checkers' map and has suggested that we head for the Arsenal."
