Eventually Fred and Astra judge that it is safe to stop running - or perhaps they simply have no breath left. At any rate they slow to a walk. They are now much too far away to hear anything more from the chamber which they fled from. "Who do <puff> you think <pant> will have won?" Fred asks.

"I've <puff> no idea. What was <puff> that thing, anyway?"

In reply, Fred merely shrugs to indicate that he does not know and would rather not even think about it, even though whatever it was came to their rescue.

"We're not <pant> out of the wood yet, <puff> even if the Dragon's dead," Astra points out. "<puff> There are still his guards <pant> to consider. They will probably have been told <puff> to be on the look-out for us. And I've no idea where in the caves we are."

  1. Then Belinda and Carola emerge from a side passage just ahead!
  2. The old man appears ahead of them, looking just as he had before his frightening transformation. Fred and Astra cannot meet his gaze. "The beast is dead," he says.
  3. The thing appears. Fred and Astra shut their eyes and try not to scream or gibber.
