A rope descended from the hole in the ceiling, and Fred was hoisted
through the roof. As his feet went through the hole, he could see
skeletal, transparent hands reaching out for him. A round stone was
slammed on top of the hands, and Fred could hear a ghastly scream from
below. He looked up at the man who had rescued him. It was a young man, all dressed in dark brown clothes that made him blend into the surroundings. Even his face was black; Fred had never seen someone with skin as dark as this man. Where did he come from? "Come with me," the man said in a strangely dark voice. He sounded a bit like Fred's uncle Tobias. After following the young man for a while, Fred realized that
they were going steadily upwards. Finally they came to a large
door.
