The ampitheater is vast. There are tiers and tiers of benches arranged in
an immense circle, each about three of Fred's hand lengths below the
other. The seats are built of a marble transversed with red veins, and
polished to a high degree. There is a weak but steady purple light shining
from the walls and ceiling, giving the ampitheater an eerie light. The
ceiling is in the form of a vast dome. It is decorated by a gigantic mural
depicting an immense dragon breathing fire. At the base, hundreds of tiers
down, there is a vast stage area, but there appears to be nothing there.
Around the top tier, where Fred is, there are many exits.
Fred's ankle still hurts too much for descending the hundreds of tiers to the stage far below to be practical. He considers his options for continuing from here. He remembers that a market was shown on Checkers' map; he must have entered this ampitheater through it. He could return through the arch back into the marketplace and then try to retrace his steps to the cavern where Astra and Checkers are. But he isn't sure whether he could manage that, given the way that the tunnel had seemed to transform into solid wall just after he had left that cavern. There had been a few other passages leading into or out of the one he had taken, but taking one of those was only likely to get him totally lost. What he can see on his own map only shows one entrance into the ampitheater, via a chamber which he is fairly sure does not correspond to the marketplace. (However he is wrong about that. The marketplace does correspond to that room.) If he could somehow manage to identify the exit that corresponds to that entrance, then that route should in theory lead him safely back to Belboz's chamber. From there he could easily get to the cavern where Astra and Checkers are waiting.
