"If I try to get down the ladder with my ankle like this, I am quite
likely to fall," Fred says to Avia. "It could be a long way down, so I
don't think that it's worth the risk. And, before you suggest it, I don't
think that you should go down on your own to investigate. It could be
dangerous, and I think that we should stick together. I'm going to try
opening the blue chest instead."
Fred tries to pry open the lid of the blue chest, as before using Avia's spear. The lid opens easily enough, but as it reaches the vertical there is an explosion. The chest was booby-trapped! Even standing the six feet or so away from the chest made possible by Avia's spear, Fred is still blown over backwards. He scrambles to his feet, trying to ignore the ringing in his ears. The chest was clearly solidly built, as it is still in one piece. Fred looks inside, expecting to find that whatever it contained has been wrecked by the explosion. To his amazement, he finds an unbroken glass bottle filled with a blue liquid. Hoping that the bottle itself is not also trapped, he gingerly lifts it out and shows it to Avia. "It's a miracle that it wasn't broken," he says. "Or the glass has been magically treated to strengthen it," Avia suggests. "So what do you suppose it is?"
