Astra was sulking. Sure, she was in the finest room of Corona Palace,
surrounded by fineries and wearing a lovely gown…but she had no freedom.
For all intents and purposes, she was a prisoner to the eccentric Governor
Gilder. While she theoretically had the run of the palace, guards
appointed by Gilder watched her every move.
Every evening was the same. At sundown, Governor Gilder would come to Astra’s chambers and ask her hand in marriage. Rather than respond, Astra would instead tell Gilder a story. Astra’s storytelling skills were so great that by the time she got to the end of each tale, Gilder would have forgotten what he had come in for. Astra was worried, however. She couldn’t come up with a compelling new story each day forever. This evening was no exception. Right on cue, there was a knock on the door. ”Enter!” shouted Astra. Governor Gilder swept into the room. “Greetings, m'lady!” He bent over and kissed her lightly on the hand. ”Governor Gilder! This is a pleasant surprise.” Astra had recited this line so many times it came out in a monotone. ”Astra, I come here with a question for you. A question of Great Import!” He got down on one knee. “Astra, I beg of you: will you be my bride?” Astra blushed. “Oh my, Governor. I don’t know what to say!” She fanned herself furiously. “Such a thing cannot be rushed into. While I think about my answer, may I pass the time by entertaining you with a story.” Gilder clapped his hands in glee. “Oooh! I love stories. What story shall you tell tonight?” Astra paused for a moment before answering. “Tonight’s tale is titled…”
