Fred vs Astra!

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 2189

Fred stood to the left of the raised dias on which the Tournament Master stood, Astra stood to the right. Various men, women and creatures stood side by side in a long line on the other side of the arena. Fred and Astra were bathed in the magical luminescent light. Fred counted at least three hundred spectators, standing and sitting and hooting and making a general racket, three hundred men, women and thinges who wanted one thing: blood.

"Ladieeeees and B*st********rds!" yelled out the molten T.M. "What a delight, what a pleasure...what a privilege to witness our next two armed combatants! One, a miserable bloke from the north - a knight (he said this with extreme disgust) no less!" The arena was filled with boos and hisses. "Yes, he may have just sliced off the head of the hapless human who went by the name of Jake, but let us look at his next opponent. She is none other than a worthless tart from the south - a warrior princess she claims to be!" More hisses and boos, with a few whistles and rude remarks about Astra's cleavage. "If ever there was a day to prove the master gender, today is it: this is the ultimate battle of the sexes!!!"

"Get ready, get set... KILL!!!!!!" The arena exploded in clapping, hooting, screaming and an all around ruckus. And midst all this noise stood Fred and Astra. They knew that this was it, the only way to fulfill their mission was to kill the other, only in that way would at least one of them reach the Dragon.

"So much for unarmed combat!" murmured Fred. "When I get through this I'm gonna kick that worthless Velus from here to eternity!"

"I guess I'll have to do the honors," interjected Astra, "as I'm the one who'll still be standing."

With that the two heroes went at each other as if their life depended on it, which of course, it did. Fred still unable to believe the predicament he was in hammered out with the butt of his sword handle, doubling Astra forward. Fred's right knee smashed upward, catching her face midway between the lips and the base of the nose, blood spurting as a shout issued from a mouth that now looked like a raw wound.

Astra, not yet resorting to her own sword, knocked Fred down with a massive amazonian backhand. She pounced upon him and reached downwards with her bare hands and clenched Fred's throat, she squeezed with all her might - floaters began crossing his eyes, gold, yellow, green. Fred's left hand gripped his sword tighter and began jabbing it into Astra's right side, in - out, in - out. Her grip seemed only to tighten, the colors of the floaters going lighter, unconsciousness coming, his right arm pinned under the warrior-woman's weight. Fred smashed up with his right knee, feeling it strike the softness of her underside, she grunted and fell back.

Fred barely had a chance to stand when the ferocious woman struck him with her sword, blood gushing as his skin ripped while she dragged the blade down and along the arm's length. Fred lurched backwards, feeling only numbness in his right hand. Astra charged him, he wheeled, half stumbling, coughing still, his throat burning, his hand numb. With his only good arm he swung his sword at Astra, she dodged but not quick enough - his blade slicing the skin across her already bloodied cheek.

The crowd was going wild, the T.M. was eloquently screaming out a play-by- play, and the two heroes went after each other with a determined yet wild fury. Too much was at stake - their nations, their people, their lives.

The two heroes pursued each other for the better part of an hour, the dusty arena was drenched in their blood, the first row of spectators, too. They were two blurred forms of violent resilience; blood dripping, spraying; muscles twitching, convulsing, flexing; body's wrestling, grasping, attacking, defending. Two forms sidestepping, lunging, smacking, lurching, wheeling, raking, dueling.
