Velus did not like the fact that once Fred signed up for the tournament he
was led away by so many dragonguards. He decided to hunt down Fred and
tell him he thinks something bad is afoot. He gingerly walked down the
tunnel into which the guards had led Fred. He passed doors to his right,
doors to his left, which way had Fred been led? Then Velus thought he
heard human voices. He rushed forward to hear more easily.
"A knight? A knight!!! Here? And from Allaria?!? This can't be good." "Good, schmood! He's a knight... our ratings will skyrocket!" "The Dragon needs to know about this guy, what's his name... Red?" "Yeah, that's what he signed in as anyway. I'm sure the Dragon already knows anyway... it's not like some joe-shmoe knight-in-shining-armor can just waltz into the Dragon's Dominion!" "Red said he's here to fight, wants an audience with the Dragon... I don't like this." "Who cares!?! If he wins the first fight he still has to keep going the rest of the day! If he's still alive at the end of the day, let him see the Dragon... he'll be too damned tired and injured to harm a leech on the underbelly of that beast!" "True... and the audience will enjoy this one." "You betcha!" Velus couldn't believe what he had just heard. The good news was that nothing foul had already happened to Fred, the bad thing was what was in store for him! Fred stood now at one end of the arena, it looked as if the area had been carved out of a natural cave. Simple light spells nearly any magician apprentice could do blanketed the area. Fred counted at least three hundred spectators, standing and sitting and gossipping and making a general racket. The dusty fighting floor was five hundred yards wide. Behind Fred, a few well-scrubbed tunnels led to changing rooms, rest areas, and the local stream-fed infirmary. An entity moved to a raised dias. It steamed and smoked and flesh under it's skin roiled like a moving lava flow. It wore metal around it's waist. "Friends!" it boomed, the word echoing among the people. Everyone quieted. "One of these brave fighters will get to meet the dragon face to face! What an honor! What a glory!" And what a speech that went on for twenty minutes! Finally the speech ended and the first fight was prepared. Fred looked at the opposite end of the arena and saw that his opponent was a hulk of a man, large biceps and triceps, muscles that seemed to ripple from every possible angle, not a neck to be seen, a head that was squarer than a box full of armor parts, and skin the color of grey ash! He stood some seven feet in height, wore purple pants five sizes too small, and had a grin the size of a middling duchy. "Ladieeeeeeees and Gentlebeastsssssssssssss!" roared the molten M.C., "Get ready to Ruuuummmblllllllllllllllllle!" Even as Fred strode out with his sword unsheathed, he swore he heard the unarmed giant murmur me smash puny manling
