For a moment Aaron looks as though he's going to refuse, but then he
shrugs and haltingly tells his story of how he had found his sister's dead
body where she had fallen in battle. Understandably, Illura looks rather
shaken when she hears that.
So Aaron is Illura's sister, Rebecca thinks, and therefore my cousin. No wonder he looked surprised when I didn't seem to recognise him. Since Aaron seems to have come to the end of his account, and nobody else is speaking for the moment, she takes the opportunity to ask the Champions: "Who are you people? I saw some of you outside the palace. Are you the people responsible for bringing me here?" "Well, yes and no," Jarlath says. "We were responsible for getting you away from the hunt, but then your getting transported to the battlefield was none of our doing. The task we had was to rescue you from Samuel's clutches." "Then I suppose that I should be very grateful," Rebecca replies. "But it seems rather presumptuous of you. Supposing I hadn't wanted to be 'rescued'?" "I'm afraid it would have made no difference," Jarlath says. "There is a much more important matter than your own happiness at stake here, and it's no more than good fortune that what is a solution to that important matter also is good for you personally." "You speak in riddles," Aaron growls. "I'm sorry if it seems like that," Jarlath responds. "Please be patient. I'm doing the best that I can to explain, but it's rather complex."
