If Andrea could dislocate her thumbs, then she thought that she would be
able to slip her hands through the cuffs on her wrists. Then hopefully she
could "put back" her thumbs. There was of course the major problem that
her ankles were also chained, but at least it would be a start.
Gritting her teeth to avoid crying out, which might alert her captors, Andrea tried to dislocate her left thumb using her right hand. There was a click, a moment of agony followed by a lingering dull pain, and her thumb hung limp. She manoeuvred the hand through the cuff, trying not to put more pressure than was unavoidable on her tender thumb. Then, agonisingly, she tried to relocate the thumb. After a moment, another click told her that she had succeeded. There might be a price to pay. From now on it might be more prone to accidental dislocation.
