"Ah, here's the last member of our little quartet." Zular said, smiling
broadly as Fred took his seat at the opposite end of the table from the
young Duke. Lord Sarlo and Lady Constance were there as well. Before all
of them, including Zular, were the royal chalices of their houses. Zular
rose and began:
"My lords, my lady, it is on this most auspicious night that we shall
decide to change history, and the course of our nation. The most
excellent knight and Lord of Suffex, Frederigo D'Honaire, has come to us
with a grand plan: a glorious coup that will end the bumbling reign of
Emry Exultaine, and install a wiser and more competent ruler in his
place."
"Enough with the semantics, Zular." Sarlo said. "Just how are we to accomplish this plot?" Sarlo was the oldest member of the group, and was less intimidated than most by Zular, despite the fact that Zular outranked him. Fred supposed that was why Zular thought of him a a useful ally. Constance, on the other hand, was about Fred's age. Fred was unsure of her assocaition with the Duke. "I have made arrangements. I have someone in the King's inner circle that is loyal to me. I have not yet decided on the method. Poison is an option, as is outright assasination. "Assasination is too risky." Lady Constance said. "What if the assassin gets caught? He may expose us. Even if not, the guard on the King will be increased dramatically if he fails." "I agree with the Lady." Fred said. He normally had no time for such intrigues, but with the Torturer's hold over him... at any rate, the idea of some shadowy assassin in the royal palace turned his stomach. "Very well, poison it is then. I have recently come across a poison that is completely odorless and tasteless. It's origins are in the lands of Hespan." Fred nearly spit at the mention of Allaria's foremost rival. He held his peace, just long enough to ask a question. "How will we get it in his drink then? His tasters check everything beforehand." "This poison will have to be inserted into his drink after it's already been tested." Sarlo said. "There are only a scant few with that kind of access." "I have such access....as Emry's mistress." Constance said. Fred and the normally composed Lord Sarlo were aghast. Zular, though, was smiling broadly. Of course he had known all along. At this point a servant entered, bearing a pitcher of wine. He went around the table and filled all the chalices, then departed. "Now, with the cup of your house, let us drink a toast to this grand plot." Everyone let Zular take the first sip, fearing the wine might be poisoned. They then drank themselves. Of course, Fred wouldn't have put it past the Duke to have poisoned the cups themselves beforehand. No, he's got nothing to gain from killing us. At least not yet.
