The two young women in the cage were hopping up and down, for even through
their shoes the iron floor must feel uncomfortably hot. Sweat was pouring
down their faces, and Angela wondered why they hadn't removed the fine
gowns that they wore in order to make themselves a bit cooler. (So did an
unhappy Sir Toby. This would mean a considerable increase in his wardrobe
expenses. [See 4551.])
No-one was guarding the chamber at present. It seemed that the two women in the cage had been left to stew, almost literally. Angela knew that she had to act fast, not only because the coast was clear for the moment but because the women might not be able to survive such intense heat for much longer. Angela could see that the cage was held in position by a chain attached to its roof. The chain went via a system of pulleys to where it was coiled round a cylindrical drum. The drum could be rotated by means of a handle. Turning the handle in one direction would raise the cage, while turning in the other direction would lower it. A metalwork tower with a platform at the top stood beside the lava pool. The platform could be reached by a flight of steps. If the cage was raised to be level with the platform then, so long as the cage's door could be opened, it would be possible to rescue the prisoners.
