Fred heard his voice echoing back and forth across the pit:"Mother! - other! -
ther! - her! - er! - r! - ! Instantly she responded, wanting to know why she
could hear him but not see him. When Fred explained, he heard her gasp in
horror. She explained to her beloved son that he was in the legendary Echo
Pit, deep in the bowels of the Southern Mountain. Fred whipped out his map
and
couldn't believe his luck! The pit was marked on it. It was right next to the
dragon's
lair. But the lair seemed to be accessible only from the bottom of the pit. Lord
Fred peered over the edge. He shone his torch down into the depths, but no
floor was visible, nor any means by which he could climb down. Lord Fred
had a
tough decision to make.
