The Drop Cycle

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 21036

Checkers starts to carve the wallhugger's legs for its marrow. His pain is not going away. Fred wants something to ease the pain. Perhaps this the pellet is safe, and maybe the "drop cycle" would provide a clue as to who Checkers is.

"Checkers, you mentioned the 'drop cycle.' What exactly is that?"

Checkers does not say anything for about ten seconds, trying to figure out how to respond to the question. She finally explains. "Maybe they don't call it that in the plains. But, you know..." She paused, trying to put an indelicate matter delicately. "When a couple get ready to have a family, there are some changes that take place in preparation. The most noticable one is that their wings are shed for a time. You know, 'wing drop.'"

"I have never had wings."

Checkers takes in a quick breath, and looks at him sympathetically. "I am sorry. So you have never flown. No wonder you are so heavy and muscular."

Fred pauses. "Checkers, nobody in the plains except for birds and insects has wings."

"Really? How do you manage? It would be awfully inconvenient when you were hunting."

"We don't really need them for anything. I think that they would just get in the way."

Checkers laughs merrily. Her laughter eventually subsides and she says, "Wings are one of those things that make life worth living. If I survive this, I shall have to visit the plains and see how a place that can function without wings." She then looks serious. "I hope we do survive."
