There were many in the ghetto who would happily have taken advantage of
Fred's unconsciousness, and who would have made such a thorough job of
robbing him that he would have finished up almost as naked as Irena. But
fortunately for Fred, there were enough honest peasants in the crowd to
discourage any thieving.
Young women commented on how handsome the knight looked; young men ogled the lady; middle-aged men were slapped by their wives if they were suspected of doing likewise; whilst old men and women muttered darkly that these were most likely a pair of demons, from their good looks quite possibly an incubus and a succubus. "We should send for a member of the order of the White Hand," one of the brighter members of the crowd suggested. "What has happened is clearly magical, so a mage is the best person to deal with it." This was generally agreed to be a good idea, so a boy was quickly dispatched to run to the lodgings of the nearest mage and bring him to the scene.
