Fred and Irena did not understand most of what the golems' leader had
said, but they were relieved to be able to rest for a while and to have
some much needed food and - especially - water. The food came in
rectangular blocks, and was unlike anything they had seen before. White
in colour, it had little flavour.
All too soon, they were told that it was time to go on. They resumed marching across the desert. Above them the sky was an almost blinding unbroken expanse of blue, apart from where the sun blazed down. It was warm, but not unbearably so. After another couple of hours, there was at last something to see other than the endless desert.
