Fred was still suspicious. Having first claimed to have been the dragon's
prisoner for days or even weeks, on being challenged Leonora had now
reduced the length of time to only a day or two. Even then, surely there
should have been at least some hint of dampness on the floor of the tunnel
where she had been chained. The chains had certainly seemed real enough
when he cut through them with his sword, though. He needed some way to
determine whether she was lying, in which case she was probably a witch
and after his gold, or telling the truth.
Fred knew he wasn't going to win a battle of wits with the girl if she was truly a witch. He was a straight-forward man, and he knew that for him the simple, direct approach was the best. He raised his sword and held its point a couple of inches from the base of her neck. "Swear by the name of God that what you have told me is the truth, or I shall kill you," he said. He knew that it was said that no witch was capable of swearing by God; to attempt to do so would cause one agonising pain.
