Star Trek Voyager: Multiverse meets Enterprise

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20957

Ensign James Chen's Personal Log:

So, yeah. That's how it all started. After I made contact with the other Scotts, I decided I don't really consider myself a Scott anymore. I have no chaos energy, I'm not being teleported anymore to any of those Addventure Game 3 episodes I couldn't seem to escape like that damn Silver Door, I escaped being part of the Scott Collective, I'm hopefully not as much of a jerk, and I'm even married! So I decided to change my name to James [335], after James T. Kirk. I kept the last name Chen, though. Even though I'm not a Scott anymore, it's still a part of my past that defines who I am.

Oh, and apparently all the chaos energy unleashed by making contact with the other Scotts (some of who hadn't lost theirs) shot us into another universe entirely, possibly another multiverse entirely. Unfortunately, there's not enough residual chaos energy left to power the dimensional hopper. This could be good news or bad news. We're not even sure if this universe has a history analogous to ours or whether it's completely different. There might not be a Starfleet or an Alpha Quadrant here at all.

Well, that's it for today, folks. This is Ensign James Chen, signing off.

Furry Ensign Wildman walked into her and James's quarters. (And Human Wildman's too, of course. She was asleep on the bed this very moment. Sometimes Furry Wildman wondered whether James and Human Wildman weren't up to something behind her back, but she always dismissed it--she knew herself too well for that.) "Hi Scott--sorry, James," she said. "What are you up to?"

"I'm just starting my personal log," said James. "Trying to be more introspective. Back when I was Scott, I didn't really think about my life--or much else, really. I'm trying to change now."

"That's good to know," said Wildman. "You are pretty thoughtful these days--well, most of the time."

"What do you mean 'most of the time?'" said Scott, mock-reproachfully.

"Well..." Before a minor argument could begin, the yellow alert went off, as did Scott's combadge. Scott swore and pressed the combadge. "Ensign Scott, report to bridge immediately," said Furry Janeway.

"OK, OK, I'm coming," sighed James. He kissed Wildman on the cheek. "I'm off to save the universe again, hon. See you later."

"Don't be so dramatic. It's only a yellow alert," said Wildman. But James had left the room by then. He walked through the bustling corridors of the Voyager and took the turbolift to the bridge. On the screen was something that looked like a Starfleet starship. It seemed vaguely familiar somehow. "OK... so what do you want me here for?" asked James.

"We're not really sure what to make of this ship," said Furry Janeway. "This ship is registered as the Enterprise NX-01, but there's no such ship in our Starfleet databanks."

"Yeah," said Human Paris. "And its registry number would indicate a very early ship, but this one looks almost more advanced than ours. Obviously, this is yet another parallel universe. We were wondering if this was mentioned in any of those Star Trek episodes you've seen--maybe there were some that didn't get mirrored in our reality."

James took a deep breath. "Well, it kind of vaguely sounds familiar. Maybe it's a Star Trek series that hasn't happened yet, like when I had a premonition about something in my dreams... Never mind. Anyway, I have no idea. It could be one of those prequel things, like with Star Wars Episode One. Probably didn't happen in your reality."

"This could be a possible past of our universe," said non-furry Tuvok.

"Huh?" said James.

"Everyone knows, of course, that the future can branch into different paths which can interact . But reasearch has also shown that the past shifts more than it is perhaps comfortable for us to believe. For instance, research from the Department of Temporal Investigations has uncovered the fact that as of a few years ago the date of Earth's first contact with aliens has changed from 2061 to 2063, and the personal history of Zefram Cochrane, the individual who built the first warp drive, has changed dramatically as well. So it's possible for us to interact with a timeline that might potentially become our past."

"That's some pretty impressive technobabble, Tuvok" said James. "That actually kind of makes sense, though. I do vaguely remember something about some Temporal Cold War."

"Kim, open a channel," said Furry Janeway. "Audio only. Even if it turns out they're not from our past, they might not necessarily know what to make of us furries. Or the humans, if they're from a furry universe--that is, assuming they're not members of a completely different species altogether."

Captain Johnathan Archer continued to examine the sight that confronted him on the viewscreen. First the Enterprise's engines had malfunctioned for no real reason anyone could figure out yet, stranding them in unknown space possibly thousands of years from home, and now this had appeared. "Archer to engineering," he said. "Trip, have you figured out anything more about what the hell happened?"

"Negative, Captain," said Trip. "And I can't figure out how to repair it, either. I mean, these engines are more fried than my momma's chicken." Archer wished that Trip could come up here and take a look at the design of the ship. It looked almost like his own, but so different.

"Is that thing from our future?" gawked Malcolm Reed. "I mean, look at the number-- NCC 74656! If it is, then that means--" His voice trailed off.

Archer's heart soared. "It's incredible! Maybe this Starfleet thing just might work out after all."

"I would not be so quick to judge, Captain Archer," said T'pol, unperturbed as usual. "Time travel and alternate timelines is an area of science that even we Vulcans are only beginning to understand. It is certainly possible that we could be interacting with something from a possible future that might not necessarily come to pass, or even from a completely alternate timeline." Archer wondered, as he occasionally did, if T'pol wasn't holding something back to test him, as the Vulcans were still uneasy about the space newbies.

Hoshi Sato sighed. This was getting way, way too weird for her. She felt like she was in the ocean struggling with all her might to keep from sinking. She took a deep breath as a hail came in. "Captain, we're being hailed," she said. "Audio only."

"Think they're hiding something?" said Reed.

"Maybe. Or it could just be that they're understandably worried about changing the past. You know, that kind of makes sense. I should suggest that be made the protocol when we get back... I wonder if that's not how it got started in their future in the first place? Well, on screen--I mean, answer them."

"This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the USS Voyager," said a voice from the somewhat staticy radio. (Probably disrupted by whatever it was that had sent him here in the first place.) It was strange to think that several centuries later (it would have to be, for there to have been 74656 starships, assuming that was what the number left) there would still be people carrying on the legacy that he himself had started. It was a simultaneously thrilling and humbling thought. "We were sent here by a surge of chaos energy and aren't sure of our location. Could you give us any information?"

"This is Captain Johnathan Archer of the Starship Enterprise. Unfortunately, we can't really give you any information--we're not really sure where we are and how we got there either."

"Captain Archer," said a methodical voice that had to be that of a Vulcan (Archer wasn't sure how he felt about the fact that Vulcans would apparently still be involved in Earth starships after all these centuries) "are you sure this is your universe? Are you capable of performing a quantum scan?"

"Yes, but only for engineering diagnostic purposes. We have no idea how to determine what universe we're in."

"You don't have to," said Janeway. "You could relay the information to us."

Captain Archer turned to T'pol. "Do you think we should trust them?" he whispered.

"I for one don't see how we have much choice," she answered.

  1. It turns out that they are in the Enterprises's home universe.
  2. It turns out they are not in the Enterprises's home universe.
