I had a nasty feeling that I hadn't heard the last of this affair, but I
hadn't expected my intuition to be proved right quite so quickly. I had
only
just resumed my course for Weston II when the radar showed a vessel
apparently appearing
out of nowhere, almost dead ahead and only a few hundred thousand
kilometres
away. There could only be one explanation: the ship had previously been
"cloaked" and had chosen to decloak. That meant that it must be either a
military or a police vessel, since the rest of us aren't allowed access to
cloaking technology. Whichever it was in this case, it was liable to be bad
news as far as I was concerned.
Then they radioed me: "This is the Indefatigable, of the Westonian Space Navy. We're answering a distress beacon transmission that we picked up a short while ago. The transmission has now ceased, but it came from this general region. Please identify yourself and tell us whether the transmission came from you. Do you need assistance?" Damn! What should I tell them? That it wasn't my beacon, obviously, but how much - if anything - else? Should I mention the lifeboat? The death of the Ib? The freighter?
