Moonlit Rendezvous

Suddenly the frenzy seems to depart from her horse, and she is able to rein it to a stop. Better yet, she no longer seems to be glued to the saddle and is able to dismount. She stumbles and almost falls, for that wild ride has taken a lot out of her, but manages to remain on her feet.

She clearly can't escape the riders of the magic carpets, so she waits as calmly as she can manage as they come in to land a few yards away. She will get no help from Illura and her followers just yet, for she has left them some way behind.

She eyes the carpets' passengers uncertainly, realising that she has seen at least some of them before, outside the palace when she was riding out for the hunt. As well as the two small figures who look rather like a cross between foxes and children (apart from the female's obvious curves, that is), there are two men - one of them a warrior from the look of him and one who looks more the studious type - a striking tall redheaded girl, a very attractive blonde, and two dusky women who could pass as identical twins.

Meanwhile the approaching Illura and her New Amazons can now see Rebecca several hundred yards ahead, silhouetted against the moonlight. Thankfully her horse seems to have come to a standstill. But who are the figures, only dimly seen at this distance, gathering around her? A band of bandits, perhaps? They spur their horses.

But someone else has seen the same tableau, and drawn a similar conclusion that there could be foul play in the offing. A mounted figure with drawn sword emerges from the woods to the side of the road, only some fifty yards from Rebecca, and rides to her aid.

1. Jarlath curses under his breath as he spots the new arrival. As if things weren't complicated enough already.
