Hide and Seek with an Ibornite?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20739

I made my way through the tube like chamber that connected both vessels at their respective ports. The dock door to the Princess Astra shut behind me and I waited several moments as the chamber equalized the air pressure to that of the lifeboat's. I remained tense and ready for anything...something about this lifeboat just didn't seem right. Actually, I could think of several things that didn't seem right! But, of course, all of this really just served to feed my curiosity. A green light flashed above the lifeboat's door signaling it was now safe to enter. With one hand on the laser pistol at my side, I boarded the small vessel.

The first thing that greeted me when I entered the lifeboat was the offensive odor that hung thick in the stale air. I stumbled forward blindly, it was hard to see anything at first. The dim red glow of the emergency lights hardly provided adequate illumination.

Crunch!

"What the-!?" I lifted my left foot to see what I had just stepped on. My eyes were beginning to adjust and I was able to make out my boot's victim; it was a cockroach.

"Well this broke down space-coffin is definantly from an Earth mothership," I muttered, scraping the roach guts off of my boot. "So what the hell is an Ibornite doing onboard!?" I was determined to find out.

I cautiously continued forward... Crunch! Crunch! It couldn't be avoided, these roaches were everywhere. You see wherever humans went, it seems they brought their vermin and diseases with them, even in deep space.

Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!...Splat! Ooh, that last one was huge! This place was infested!

I finally came to the lifeboat's small control room at the head of the ship but found it empty, not counting a few more roaches that scurried about. I took a moment to study the room, all the controls were familiar; this was a manmade ship in every detail.

"HELLO! ANYBODY HERE!?" I exclaimed. There was no answer. A million more nasty theories formed in my mind. What was going on here!? Was this bug-eyed freak playing hide and seek!? I hadn't traveled this far off-course to be toyed with! Well, this vessel wasn't very large and I'd find ol' tube-face sooner or later. I left the control room and went back the way I had came, down the central corridor. All of these Earth standard lifeboats were designed pretty much alike, and I knew there were only four rooms off of the corridor.

Out of nowhere a thunderous, explosion-like roar coming from the starboard side of the lifeboat caught me off guard. I drew my gun and pointed it in the the general direction of the disturbance (not sure whether it would do any good). My ears rang, this had been a serious explosion and my life could be in jeopardy. The entire vessel shuddered and the artificial gravity was immediately cut off...

  1. ...I had to think fast, there was no time for hesitance!
