You tell Sarah that you will give it another couple of hours. She says
farewell, and you
are left alone with your thoughts. You could wait here for a few more
hours, as you told Sarah
you would,
and then follow the New Amazons. You could probably catch them up before
they reached the
border with Daria, which is still some way off. Or you could retrace your
steps, and
try to find Aaron, though you know he must almost certainly be either dead
or captured.
Or you could just stay here indefinitely and grieve. Normally, you'd give
yourself a
talking to, and force yourself to do something positive, but you don't seem
to have the
will for it. What you think should also worry you, but doesn't seem to at
all, is that
you've killed a man.
Then you hear someone approaching. You still have just enough of your wits about you to get under cover. Whoever it is seems to be coming very slowly. Eventually a figure hobbles into the clearing, using a broken branch as a makeshift crutch, apparently with a badly twisted ankle. The moonlight catches his face; it's Aaron! You dash out, throw your arms around him, and kiss him full on the lips. Aaron appears taken aback by the warmth of your welcome, but not unhappy at it. You say: "I'm so relieved! I thought you were dead." Aaron finds his voice, and says with a grin: "I must go missing more often, if I'll get a welcome like that every time. I got away all right, but then I badly twisted my ankle, and it's been very slow going ever since. I thought that you and Sarah would be long gone from here, and I doubted that I could catch you up, let alone catch up with the main group. What we learnt would have been useful, but not if I couldn't get the information to Elinor." "Sarah's gone on ahead," you tell him. "She should be able to catch the others up, and tell Elinor what we learnt. So what did we learn exactly? I'm a little confused."
