a Bug's Life: Prelude

With the strange sounds of some proverbial higher power dissipating from the noble knight's mind, Fred lifts himself onto his feet. He wobbles for some time as his body tries to recover from its fall. Fred was unsure what had just occurred: he had begun to descend the ladder into the pit, he had heard a great roar and felt the licks of blue-black flame as it began to scorch his body, he had fallen, he had hit the earth.

"I should be dead," he said.

"Yes, you should," said a voice.

Fred twirled and as he did so his whole body was a blur of motion, his armor - pieces of metal meshed into a single protective garment, his leather coat - seeming like wings upon this marvel of a man.

"Who said that?!!?" growled Fred.

"I did," hummed the voice.

Fred peered into the darkness all about him, the voice was coming from before him now. His right hand had already unsheathed his axe while his left was hefting a throwing dart.

"I can't see you," murmured Fred.

"Sure you can, you just don't know what to look for," the voice trilled.

"Then enlighten me," barked Fred.

"You got it pal," barked back the voice. In seconds the area where Fred had found himself was illumined by the light of a firefly, a firefly the size of a poodle! a firefly wearing a black tuxedo and sporting a blue corvat!! a firefly that was uglier than sin yet with an air of sophistication and means!!!

"Who are you?!!?" gasped Fred still not letting down his guard.

"I'm the bug that just saved your life!" smiled the overgrown firefly.

1. What's this? A bug! saved Fred! what of the ROAR? what of the blue-black flame?!? What in the Southern Caves is going on here??!?
