The Long Night

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 20505

Aaron looks at you firmly. "You can't go on like this. It's still several days to Daria. By the time we reach the other side of the pass the infection could kill you. You have to stay here." He turns to Alyssa. "Make sure she stays."

"What about you?" you say.

"I can take care of myself," he says.

"But..."

"Stay. You don't really have any other choice. Meanwhile I'll go off to Daria to see what I can do."

"You're one man..."

"I'm a prince. They'll listen to me."

"And what if you don't survive long enough to get there?"

"I will. Besides, two people aren't much better than one, especially when one is in no condition to fight. Now, stay." He turns and begins to walk away. "I thank you for your help, and I bid you farewell."

You watch him leave. You know you should stop him, but you also know he's too stubborn to listen. Frustrated, you turn to Alyssa. "So, where's this abbey?"

You can't sleep.

You've been at the abbey for a couple of hours now. The resident healer investigated your wound and rubbed some sort of medicine on it, then the abbey monks showed you, Alyssa, and Greger to a small room. Alyssa and Greger fell fast asleep, but you still lie awake in bed. You keep thinking about Aaron. You know you belong in the pass, travelling to save Daria alongside the Prince, but instead you're trapped in a lonely abbey in an unfamiliar land. Though you and your sister apparently grew up together, you feel no connection to her whatsoever. You simply feel... empty. As if there was nothing before you lost your memory.

You try to think over the events that have happened to you since then. You think about the battlefield... you think about Aaron... you think about the village... you think about Greger's arrest... you think about the jail cell... you think about your escape. You think about the latest in what seems to be a string of obstacles keeping you from doing anything, and you wonder why. Why has all of this happened to you? Why did you and Alyssa alone survive the battle? Why did Aaron meet you? Why did you have to save Greger? Why did you have to get wounded and get stranded here?

Soemthing seems strange about it all. Not right. It's almost as if there's a greater force at work than yourself, like some higher power has placed you along this path. Perhaps it's doing it to teach you something; perhaps it's doing it for its own amusement; perhaps there is no reason. You realize, though, that for better or worse, this is your reality, and you might as well do with it what you can.

You sit up. The bed is getting hard. You can stand it no longer. Jumping down onto the cold stone floor, you begin to pace.

You try to think about all the events that occured in the village leading up to your escape. Something seems out of place. Did Greger really steal from that man's house? Is that really why the townspeople were chasing him? And why did your father say that Greger had been hanged? Something doesn't seem to fit. You wonder if perhaps something more is going on in the village than you first suspected.

You sit back down. You know you have to do something; staying in this abbey and doing nothing when so much seems to be going on is driving you mad. You could investigate the town further and try to figure out what exactly is going on. You could try once again to catch up with Aaron. You could try to figure out just who you are.

You sigh. Or you could just stay where you are and rot.

  1. You go after Aaron.
