After a while, you tell yourself that crying isn't going to get you
anywhere, and you
manage to stop. Having nothing better to do, you take stock of yourself.
Your bruises will soon heal, but you are more concerned about the
dagger-wound that you
received to
your back. You can feel a dressing over the wound. How bad is it, and will
it heal
without affecting your mobility? With your
arms chained to the wall, you have no direct way of investigating the
wound, but you don't feel any
pain, even when you experimentally tense your back and shoulder muscles. It
looks like
the wound was superficial. Apart from that, you are hungry and thirsty, and
your bladder
feels uncomfortably full, all of which suggests that you have been here for
some hours.
Then you hear the sound of sobbing. For a moment you think you must have started crying again without noticing, but then you realise that it is coming from across the room, from the darkest corner. You can just make out a shadowy form, but no more. "Hello," you say. "Hello," says a girl's voice, not dissimilar to your own. "I'd managed to doze off and have only just woken up. How long have you been here, sister?" Does she mean "sister" as in fellow New Amazon or does she mean it literally? "Several hours, I think," you reply. "I can't see you in the shadow there? Are you chained up too, and who are you?" "Don't be silly, Karen. Surely even in the dark you can recognise your own twin sister. Yes, my arms are chained to the wall, just as I can see that yours are. They obviously don't intend to let any New Amazons escape. I know father was against our running away to join the New Amazons - after all he's a man - but I didn't think when I fled here for refuge after we lost the battle that he'd chain me up. I suppose he could be in trouble with the other villagers if he was seen as being soft on rebels, though. So what happened to you, then?" Your mind reels for a moment, as you try to take all this in. No wonder the man knew your name, and no wonder that your life was spared. You wonder if your twin is identical to you - it is too dark to tell - and what her name is.
