The four roads stretched out ahead of Frederigo D'Honaire, almost inviting him to choose. He knew he had to be careful. He had heard legends of men who had been trapped in the Dreamlands, and had been eternally scarred by what they had found there. Yet he knew that there was no other way out than to leave under this world's terms. However, he also knew that he could not fully trust anything he saw from this moment onward.
The question remained: which of the four paths would he choose? For some time, Fred stood at the crossroads, pondering. Finally, he stepped forward onto the black path. "Well, well, well," said a voice behind him. Fred turned around and saw the same gnarled old man who had greeted him earlier. "So you have chosen the path of death. How very interesting. What led you to make this choice?" "It is not a choice I would have preferred, but I see no other here. Riches and power cannot lead to happiness. Love, perhaps, is better, but although you called it "everlasting love," since it is a different choice from this one, it must be the love of a mortal. And love can fail all too easily. Riches and power do not last, even human love does not last. The only eternal happiness can be found with our Father in Heaven. And the only way there is through death. Besides, this path surely leads to the Dragon of the Caves, since every man has said that to face him is almost certain death. In the name of honor, and to prevent more deaths at the Dragon's hand, I must resume the quest at any cost. And the other answers are all too obvious. This can be the only correct choice." The wizard smiled. "Even I cannot say whether this is the correct choice. The correct choice is different for every man. Yet I know this: Of all those who have set foot in the Dreamlands, only you have taken this path. You may turn back, if you wish, of course, but I look forward to seeing what comes of this path if you take it." Without a sound, the old man seemed to gradually fade away. Fred turned around as soon as he disappeared. As he stepped forward onto the black path, Fred was afraid. Yet he knew that he was a knight and should not fear the death of the body. He would face his fate despite the fear in his heart. He stepped forward onto the black road. As he walked onward, he saw that the mist that permeated this region was fading away. At the same time, the lands were becoming both brighter and more indistinct. Finally, he no longer felt as if he was walking and merely saw the light growing brighter around him. Finally, he opened his eyes.
