Revelations

He looks at you, clearly surprised. "Lost your memory?"

"Yes," you say, nearly whispering. "I... I woke up in the... the ditch..." You trail off.

"Hmm..." he says. "That's bad." He thinks. "That's really bad. You can't help me, can you?"

"Help you what?" you ask.

He looks into your eyes. "You don't understand what happened here, do you?"

You look down and shake your head.

He sighs. "Okay. A few years ago a group of women started protesting the way they were being treated in the kingdom. It started out as a purely political movement, but when the men of the kingdom began persecuting the protesters it grew more violent. Some of the women took up arms and seceeded from the kingdom. They formed an army and called themselves the New Amazons. They fled into the high country here and formed the town that's now smoldering behind us."

He pauses, as if the next part is painful. Then he continues. "My father, King Hengist, swore to fight the rebels with all his strength. It was then, five months ago, that my sister ran away from the castle." He grows quiet. "She... she began rallying other women to the cause of the New Amazons, and they marched here to help those who fought for equality.

"I learned a month ago that my father was planning to send an army here. The New Amazons were centralized in this town, and it would be easy to crush them. I didn't want to see my sister dead, though, so I sent a messenger here warning them. Two weeks later I recieved news that the messenger hadn't arrived, but from the looks of that," he gestures toward the parchment in your hand, "it was wrong. So I left the castle and tried to get here before my father's army. It seems I'm too late." He looks around the battlefield. "The rebellion's been crushed. The New Amazons fell, along with my sister." He punctuates the last by drawing his sword and thrusting it into the muddy ground. He then looks at you. "You must be the only survivor."

Your mind races. All of this is so new, so big, so sudden. It's hard to comprehend, but, looking around, it's hard to doubt it. You look at the Prince. "What do you want of me?"

He looks directly at you. "I want you to help me avenge my sister and the New Amazons. What do you say?"

1. You demand that he tells you his plan first.
