Astra, King's Mistress?

When Fred asked: "I don't suppose you've seem the King's mistress, have
you?" he was stunned when Astra replied: "But I'm the King's
mistress!" "You
can't be," he said. "You weren't on the ship, and anyway if you are the
King's mistress
how can you be a warrior-princess who has been seeking the dragon in the
caverns?"
Astra had a funny glazed expression on her face, but then it cleared. "You
must be deluded,"
she said. "I am neither a warrior nor a princess, and I was on the ship
with you. I
couldn't understand why the King should send his mistress on such a
voyage, and wasn't
altogether convinced when he said that I could use my charms to establish
friendly relations
with any countries we might discover. I fear that he has found another
woman to replace
me in his affections."
Fred was amazed and confused by this, which seemed to contradict what Astra had been saying only shortly before. What strange enchantment was she under?
